Ike, West Among Top 20 Wisconsin High Schools in U.S. News and World Report's 2022 Rankings

The School District of New Berlin’s two high schools are considered among the state’s and nation’s best, according to the U.S. News and World Report’s 2022 rankings.

After ranking third a year ago, New Berlin Eisenhower ranked fifth for the third time in four years while West climbed from 25th in 2020 to 20th this year (West’s 2021 ranking was invalid as a result of a clerical error made by the publication) out of 452 ranked Wisconsin high schools. With rankings of 350th and 857th, both Eisenhower and West finished in the top 4.8 percent of the nearly 17,850 nationally ranked
schools, according to the publication.

Among the top-five, Eisenhower is one of only three traditional public high schools, along with two charter or preparatory schools; there are four charter or preparatory
schools among the top 20.

“The U.S. News & World Report’s ranking has long been a source of pride for our community, and rightfully so,” Superintendent Joe Garza said. “To consistently have two of the best high schools in the state – along with four incredible elementary schools – helps make New Berlin a destination community year in and year out.

“The rankings are a direct result of our incredible students, staff and families. And with the unwavering support from our families, School Board and the community, we continue to strive to provide the best educational opportunities possible for all students.”

The U.S. News & World Report’s rankings methodology is based on six measures, with the weights used for each indicator in parentheses:

• College Readiness (30%): proportions of 12th graders who took and earned a qualifying score on at least
one Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exam. Earning a qualifying score is worth
three times more than just taking the exam.
• State Assessment Proficiency (20%): Aggregated scores on state assessments that students may be
required to pass for graduation.
• State Assessment Performance (20%): How aggregated scores on state assessments compare with U.S.
News’ expectations given the proportions of students who are Black, Hispanic and from low-income
households.
• College Curriculum Breadth (10%): The proportions of 12th graders who took and earned a qualifying
score on AP and IB exams in multiple areas. More exams are valued more than fewer exams up to a
maximum of four. Earning a qualifying score on an exam is worth three times more than taking one.
• Underserved student performance (10%): Scores on state assessments aggregated just among students
who are Black, Hispanic and from low-income households. These scores are compared with that is typical
in the state for non-underserved students, with parity or higher being the goal.
• Graduation rate (10%): The proportion of entering ninth graders who graduated four academic years later.
